BJ Waller Involved in Historic Update of Oakham Castle

Working closely with John Wright of Weston Allison Wright, BJ Waller was able to produce an ironmongery schedule for high end Frank Allart door furniture. The products were specified in Polished Brass Un-lacquered to operate the new doors but still in keeping with the existing furniture in the Castle.

Oakham Castle is one of the finest examples of Norman domestic Architecture in the country and following a grant of £2.1m from the Heritage Lottery Fun for restoration works, now boasts an array of new displays and activities for families and those interested in its history. The ironmongery had to be robust and fit for purpose to cope with the many visitors but also to compliment the history and grandeur of the Castle.

Working very closely with the main contractor Woodhead Heritage, we were also able to provide new locks and latches where required. We were able to re-use some of the existing horizontal locks and door furniture as they were in very good condition and still worked very well with the new products being supplied. This also helped to keep the costs in check

One of our biggest concerns with this project was the deadline. When John Wright approached us regarding this project, Oakham Castle had already announced the grand re-opening only 4 weeks away. Frank Allart furniture is manufactured and finished in the UK and is usually on a standard lead time of 6-8 weeks. Nigel Smith and Sylvan Harrison of Frank Allart really pulled out all of the stops and supplied the entire order in just over 3 weeks, enabling Woodhead Heritage to take delivery and install the products in time for the grand re-opening.

Mark Lord, Area Account Manager for BJ Waller, said “With all parties working tirelessly together to reach the end goal, we were able to supply some fantastic products that fit in really well with the existing ironmongery, creating a brilliant end result. Woodhead Heritage were very clear and concise about what their goals were for this project. They worked long hours to ensure the goods were installed ready for the grand opening, they were a pleasure to work with on this project and we look forward to working with them and the architects Weston Alison Wright again in the future”.
